Gregory Burgess Architects were appointed as exhibition designers for the travelling exhibition Treasures of the Forbidden City and Paintings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties 14-20th Centuries, which travelled throughout Australia in 1981-82. The exquisite collection has been compiled from museums from twelve provinces and cities. The paintings express the continuous pleasure and delight which Chinese painters have drawn from the landscape and nature, and the need for personal expression when depicting these scenes. The exhibition design used a delicate combination of lighting, materials and screens to create a tranquil and mysterious space to behold and absorb the beauty and fascination of these works. Like with the six principles governing the creation of these works: qi (spirit), yin (harmony), si (thought), jing (scenery and effect), bi (brushwork), and mo (ink); the design of the exhibition had to encapsulate particular intrinsic qualities, however it also had to be highly practical and adaptable to the five galleries in which it was displayed throughout Australia.
