The Education Department’s requirements were for a new library, and as no suitable site area was available for the new building, it was decided that the area over the existing canteen – which had been initially designed to take a second storey – would be appropriate. The original 1960s building displays strong institutional character, with its repetitive modules and length, and it was felt appropriate to create a new building which, while sitting on and nestling into the existing building, has its own identity and demonstrates an evolution of attitude to education.
The gently swelling corners of the new building are in significant contrast to the rectilinear existing buildings – as though it is emerging, or moving out of the old. The two round windows look outwards, relating to the park and beyond, and the new library actively encourages the individual potential of every student.
